Stand Up Paddling (aka.SUP) is the fastest growing on water sport our nation has seen. SUP is part paddling, part balancing, and part surfing. In small swells, you can easily paddle into and ride the waves without worrying about how to stand up and surf. You already are standing up. No waves, no problem. On any body of flat water, you can cruise and glide while touring the local sites efficiently and while enjoying a great vantage point for aquatic wildlife and other vistas. It is quite easy and involves a very small learning curve. SUP Boards have a myriad of uses available to anyone one who likes being on the water.

Nuremberg (Nürnberg) is Bavaria's second-largest city and a major tourist magnet. It woos visitors with a wonderfully restored medieval Altstadt (old town), a proud castle, major museums, the world-famous Christmas market and more. The day I arrived, I was awestruck by my first glimpse of its magnificently restored Altstadt, enclosed by towering stone walls and guarded by a grand old hilltop castle. The citizens reconstructed it from rubble after Allied bombings wiped out 90% of the city in World War II. My visit coincided with the Altstadtfest, which is truly magical, particularly at night, when Nurembergers drink beer and eat the Nürnberger Bratwürste (finger-size sausages) as live music and the aroma of roasted meat sizzling on the grill fills the square.

The main reason why I visited Nurnberg was The International Canoe Trade Show & Business Forum – Kanumesse that took place at the International Exhibition Centre Nuremberg (Germany). The show is a gathering of manufacturers from all over the world who come together to show the latest paddling goods -  everything about kayaking and canoeing: kayaks, canoes, folding boats, inflatables, rec-boats, sit-on-tops, rental boats, paddles, clothing and accessories. It’s a meeting point for buyers, manufacturers, distributors and wholesalers.

What’s new at KANUMESSE?

Dagger

GREEN BOAT (new); one of the fastest creek and river running boats in the world. Already established as a competition king. It matches long boat speed with stability and forgiveness.

AXIOM (prototype); offers great down river speed, effortless eddy hopping and attainment capabilities, smooth carving and wave surfing and the potential to side slip and spin on waves. It is bigger, more comfortable and faster compared to any other river play boat on market ever!!!

BLACKWATER 10.5, BLACKWATER 12 and BLACKWATER II 13.5; the multi-purpose recreational boats, now ready also for fishing....

AT2 Flexi; shorter, lighter, faster, the choice of the pros; the perfect all-river high performance paddle. An excellent choice for people who love the flex of wood.

AT4 Play; The Adventure Technology AT4 E kayak paddle has a smaller shaft for paddlers with smaller hands – women, teens and also some of the world’s best creekers—the small shaft maximizes grip control while hucking the big stuff. Play blades have a dihedral powerface for smooth transitions, and are made of extremely durable polypro and glass composite.

media.nl.jpg The Biscuit’s a brand new play boat, and everyone at CKS is really excited to try it. The boat itself looks like a Liquid Logic (Bad Ass Outfitting, signature shape, and great color selection) with some innovative tweaks and features. The most noticeable is the “Bumper” on the sidewall, bow and stern. The spin-disc is back, with some modifications to give it more speed, and looseness. It’s coming out this February, so get on the list and reserve on now. Once The Biscuit’s are out of the oven, everyone’s gonna’ want one. Click here to read more about the BISCUIT....

South Africans Steve Woods and Bevan Manson broke all records with their sub-4 hour times for the 42.5mile (68km) Phatwater Challenge on the Mississippi River.

This was the two paddlers' third race in their tour across the United States.  Starting with the US Champs in San Francisco on 20 September where Woods came 3rd and Manson a disappointing 7th, they raced two weeks ago in Chicago, this time Manson beating Woods in a close finish for 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Working together they beat US paddlers Mike Herbert and Erik Borgnes (who also paddled San Francisco - 6th - and Chicago - 4th) who also finished in less than four hours.

Woods finished the trip from Claiborne County Port Facility at Grand Gulf to the boat ramp at Natchez Under-the-Hill in 3:54:00, smashing the previous record of 4:16:55 set by Arkansan Mike Herbert.  For being the first to break the four hour barrier, Woods won $2,000.  Manson finished one second behind!

"It was kind of like tag-team kayaking out there," triple Olympian Herbert told the local Natchez Democrat community newspaper. "They were pecking their way and he was pecking his, and I kind of stuck with him."

Woods and Manson have been travelling together cross country with Manson's family in a van they bought in San Francisco.  From here they move on to New York where the two men (along with Erik Borgnes) will race the New York Mayor's Cup next Sunday.

Hi all,

Thanks for stopping in to have a quick read of my rant and rave. As this is my first post I'll probably be letting off a fair bit of steam, and hopefully by next time I'll have been paddling and won't feel so tense.

"Why so tense?" I hear you ask. Well, here goes.

I moved to China over a year and a half ago, packing only those necessities that could fit into a 25kg weight allowance. Unfortunately that didn't quite allow for my nomad, disco and my girlfriend's rpm, plus all the kit accumulated from more than ten years of paddling.

We decided to pack all of our kit and boats, in the hope that we would be able to get them shipped out at some point in the future, when we had sussed out storage and shipping, things like that.

Well that day finally arrived. We moved to a new flat which provided us with ample space to store 3 boats plus the trimmings. We set about getting everything to Hamburg, ready to be loaded onto a cargo ship to be sent half way around the world. That part came off with almost no hitches, taking just a couple of weeks from when we started.

Yippee, the boats are on their way. Great, the ship has sailed. 3 1/2 - 4 weeks, says the shipping agent. Unfortunately that didn't take into account the amazing party that China undertook throughout August - The Olympics. All shipping to olympic cities was stopped for the duration and our boats languished in some malaysian harbour until they cleared the backlog of shipments necessary for business.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those China-Olympic bashers. I had an amazing time, getting to see three days of flatwater racing, plus two days of football. We were a little bit disappointed to find out that the slalom course, one of the most amazing man-made whitewater courses I've seen, is due to be ripped out and converted to a waterpark now that the Olympics are over. But oh well, we got to see Tim Brabants qualify for the finals (had to head back to start work, so missed the gold medal race).

With the Olympics officially done and dusted, we started to get our hopes up that our boats might be arriving soon, and so they did. In the middle of September we were told that the boats had arrived in Qingdao, and now it was just a question of customs.

That was just the start of it, suddenly we had to provide detailed itemised lists of everything that was in the bags we'd packed almost two years beforehand. We were intially told that if there is any difference between our lists and what is actually there we may not get the differences. Then we were told that little things wouldn't matter. Then we had to provide a letter from employers. Then a letter stating what the products were and what we intended to do with them. They wanted to know what our secret ulterior commercial motive was for importing these items. Employers had to stamp and sign our itemised lists. plus lots more paperwork. Finally we were told that everything was sorted and we just had to wait for the signature of an official. Great. Except he might have gone on holiday, nobody's actually sure, and they haven't seen him for a while.

Today they got back to me telling me everything has been processed, but there's a slight irregularity. They looked on the internet and decided that my 4 year old second hand nomad was actually a brand new one worth close to $1000. Ouch. We've given up on getting our hopes up now, now we just hope that they'll arrive sometime this decade.

My advice to you, dear readers, is, if you're planning on importing your boat to China, bring it on the plane, or don't bother.

Anyhoo - the weather was great but the coaching wasnt, now im used to big water not pathetic lakes and teaching cold scouts in cheap horrible gear who cant be arsed paddling anymore than we could on that weekend.

I dont know weather uv'e been to Llyn  Gwynant in the morning but its ''BLOODY'' freezing!!!

If your reading this thinking why is he compalining about all this when he said above that the weekend was awesome, it really was!!! Only being involved in the sport of kayaking can you jump of a huge rock into a lake and have a shower togther after and it means nothing ( kayaking kags and shorts still on !!!!!! )

After involved fires, long talks well into the night and having a laugh with friends. There was even a mountain at the base of our campsite, which was just asking to climbed at 2 in the morning ( I didnt do it but others did ) I went up whilst there was still light and still managed to get my jeans dirty!!!

Anyway the weekend as I said was AWESOME - some for reasons that aern't getting written on hear - ahahahhahha - your curious now arn't you......

Begnatur i september

canoe_chaos.jpgThis Saturday Dianne and I returned to Broken Bow, Oklahoma for some Class II Kayaking on the Lower Mountain Fork River. We were showing off the river to a writer and a couple photographers from the Chevy Sporting Journal. They are planning an upcoming article on Oklahoma canoe and kayak adventures.

The guys all did a good job paddling the LMF River. Despite being surrounded by folks flipping their canoes and sliding off the top of SOT kayaks, they managed to keep their boats upright and their camera gear dry. The weather was perfect and the water flow was good. It was an excellent day for a float trip with mild temps and a comfortable breeze!
